YBTI, like our other partners, promotes the establishment of locally owned and operated schools in the remote communities that make up the Mentawai Islands. One of their main activities is to provide vocational training for teachers.
Having witnessed our partner’s efforts throughout many years, the Regional government of the Mentawai Islands called on YBTI for the training of teachers from six preschools in the region. These teachers hadn’t received a proper training and, therefore, had difficulties to plan their activities effectively and systematically; eventually, four of the six schools came to a halt. In light of this situation, officials from the Department of Education called on YBTI’s assistance and a four-day training session was organized in Betaet from 16 to 19 November 2018.
All logistical arrangements were handled by the Department of Education for West Siberut, in consultation with the head of the District Educational office for Mentawai. 17 teachers participated in an interactive program which allowed them to gain a deeper understanding of the core activities of the preschools. The training also promoted an approach to education oriented towards service to the community. The teachers then returned to their respective communities, accompanied by experienced YBTI teachers who acted as trainers. During the two weeks that followed, the YBTI trainers assisted participants to plan and carry out lessons, as well as meetings and visits with parents.
The head of the Department of Education office of West Siberut, Mr. Kornelius, and the School Inspector, Mr. Lauren, actively participated on all four days of the training. Due to the positive experience from this collaboration, they decided to organize a similar training with YBTI for elementary school teachers of 14 other schools. This training will have a special focus on capacity building and the commitment to service.
